Notes
This CD is a great release. Its title is misleading, as it claims (inaccurately) that Simon's 1980 performance is from the Monterey Pop Festival. Indeed, Simon's solo show (from the "One Trick Pony" tour) is from Philadelphia, and was filmed for a video release. This CD was produced during a 14-month Australian law loophole in the early-1990s that allowed ROIOs to be released - legally - as long as a consumer warning (to the effect of "the artist didn't approve of this tape and it might be of inferior quality") featured prominently on the label.
Monterey Pop Festival: a watershed performance for Simon and Garfunkel, they closed the first night of the three-day festival. This show features one of the first readings of "Punky's Dilemma." Likely due to this, Simon altered the lyrics of "At The Zoo" to make a "cereal cycle." As Paul and Artie mused, "a bowl of Rice Crispies ain't what it used to be." This recording is very nice, with wonderful stereo separation of Paul and Artie's voices.
Tower Theater: from Simon's "One Trick Pony" tour and filmed for video release, this is the full-length set list (less "Still Crazy After All These Years"), as opposed to the Live At The Tower ROIO and the "On The Radio" transcript disc from Westwood One. The band sounds great, and the performances are spirited.
